Priestly playwright, secular priest: William Drury’s Latin and English drama

This article examines the literary career of secular priest William Drury, with an emphasis on his drama. The Latin plays which he wrote for performance at English College in Douai are among best-known Catholic college dramas Stuart era; markedly different from Jesuit drama dominates corpus British plays, they suggest conscious dissociation that imaginative tradition. Hierarchomachia: or Anti-Bishop, a satirical closet intervenes controversy surrounding legitimacy and extent England’s episcopacy, can also be attributed to Drury. In both drama, Drury draws stimulus ideological opposition Jesuits other regulars. Yet characteristic blend didacticism comedy, sympathy plight all Catholics—surely fomented by death brother notorious “Fatal Vesper”—point broader priestly concerns.
